The Global Health Body Sounds Warning Over Acute Lack of Obesity Medications

Under a tenth of people who could benefit from weight-loss injections like Wegovy can access them, caution the global health agency as it releases its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Considering more than one billion people worldwide currently living with obesity, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer availability to this class of drugs.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidance affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with holistic and continuous support," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are key hurdles to broad availability to the injections that can assist patients in reducing considerable weight, says the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Even under the current most favorable outlook, the manufacturing of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, per the WHO.

The advice encourages governments and firms to increase availability, via measures like licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the core component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Drugs Function

These medications mimick a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and increase the sense of being full so users consume fewer calories.

People typically see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the weekly injections.

Evidence indicates users may see weight return a year later of stopping the drug, when their usual food cravings come back.

Being overweight or obese raises your chance for developing medical conditions, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Obesity impacts individuals in countries worldwide and was responsible for 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
